At the end of December, people in Nam Phuong Tien commune, Chuong My district, harvested Dien pomelo, a specialty of Hanoi. Organically grown pomelo trees produce large, sweet, and berry fruits.
Dien pomelo originates from Phu Dien and Phuc Dien wards, Bac Tu Liem district. For 3 years now, this pomelo variety has been organically grown by the authorities of Nam Phuong Tien commune, Chuong My district, Hanoi, with 19 households and 150 hectares of garden land. However, this year, there are only 5 households with 2.5 hectares of standard gardens.
Organic Dien pomelo does not use fertilizers, chemical drugs, only organic fertilizers, use antagonistic fungi to prevent harmful fungi...
The family of Mr. Nguyen Van Oanh, 70 years old, in Nui Be village, is one of five households growing 350 organic pomelos on an area of more than 3,000 square meters. Most pomelos in the garden have been planted since 2006 when Chuong My district had the policy to convert arable land lacking irrigation water to fruit trees.
After 5 years, the pomelo tree starts to bear fruit and it takes 3 more years for the fruit to start being sweet. "However, for the past 14 years, my family has only grown in the form of soil retention, low yield, and poor quality fruit," said Mr. Oanh.
In the last two years, after many times of training from experts, aiming for the organic farming model, Mr. Oanh brought soil and water for testing. Because of meeting the criteria, the pomelo garden was licensed. Pomelos grow well, fruit set rate is high, from 120 to 150 fruits per tree.
Once a week, the garden owner cleans the yellow flytrap. The black traps are dense with flies and insects that are harmful to plants. When implementing this model, households are supported with automatic irrigation systems, fertilizers, and preventive drugs.
Mr. Oanh fertilizes Tan Lac pomelo trees to get flowers to cross-pollinate for Dien pomelo. Around the garden, there are 4 microbial composting tanks (maize and soybean incubation for 2 months) to fertilize the plants.
Flowers of Dien pomelo normally only produce 40% of fruit, when in season, other varieties of pomelo flowers must be pollinated to achieve a high fruiting rate. "In February, when the tree blooms, I will let the soil under the tree dry out, after the leaves have partially fallen, I will fertilize the soil around the base, then put water on it, and after a few days, the flowers will be crowded with young shoots. Grapefruits are only planted for 10 months to be harvested once," said Mr. Oanh.
Since 10 days, the garden owner has harvested plump and golden pomelos to pay orders to customers. Before the harvest day, people will not water and do not pick when it rains to keep the sugar in the fruit.
Grapefruit that has just been picked will be washed with clear lime water and left to dry. This way helps pomelos to be preserved longer, up to 3-4 months.
Each pomelo is then wrapped in foam so as not to be crushed during transportation. Dien pomelo is ripe on the occasion of Tet, thin skin, yellow shrimp, rich in water and sweet. In particular, grapefruit is very fragrant.
Each pomelo is affixed with a QR code for visitors to trace the origin of the growing area, the name of the household... The pomelo garden of Mr. Oanh's family is the first with the code NPT/O:01.
A month before Tet, pomelo growers often pick grapefruit to make it sweeter in the water. Selected pomelos, divided into categories 1, 2 and 3. Type 1 this year sells for 16,000 VND each (weighing from 600 to 800 grams).
Due to the prolonged epidemic, the output for pomelos is difficult. It is expected that this year, Mr. Oanh's family will earn more than 100 million VND, down by half compared to last year.
