Diabolical ironclad beetles

The diabolical ironclad beetle can survive getting run over by a car. Scientists now know how. The diabolical ironclad beetle, a desert bug native to California, can withstand nearly 40,000 times its body weight. That means it can be run over by a car — and live to tell the tale.  A study published Wednesday in the journal Nature has pinpointed the factor that makes it so durable: Its exoskeleton, and in particular, its elytra, or the forewings that cover the beetle's wings. "The ironclad is a terrestrial beetle, so it's not lightweight and fast but built more like a little tank," David Kisailus, the principal investigator and a materials science and engineering professor at the University of California, Irvine, said in a statement. "It can't fly away, so it just stays put and lets its specially designed armor take the abuse until the predator gives up." Cicadas and Palo Verde beetles? Harmless.  But these Arizona bugs and reptiles can hurt you. In beetl...

This was how anchor Norah O’Donnell touted their efforts: And tonight, the Trump campaign is accusing Twitter and Facebook of censorship after the social media companies blocked the spread of an unverified story about former Vice President Joe B...

Joe Biden • Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act

Biden says 1994 crime bill was a 'mistake' during ABC town hall © Getty Images Asked during a televised town hall in Philadelphia whether supporting the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was a mistake, Biden said that “yes, it was.” But Biden also said that the worst effects of the crime bill came as a result of decisions made on the part of individual states after its passage.  Biden also noted that the bill had broad support among prominent Black leaders at the time and that things have “changed drastically” since then. Nevertheless, he repeated, “it was a mistake.” Biden’s support for the 1994 crime bill during his tenure as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has drawn criticism over the course of his presidential campaign. He has previously expressed regret for backing the measure,  calling it “a big mistake” last year . read://https_thehill.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fthehill.com%2Fhomenews%2Fcampaign%2F521326-biden-says-1994-crime-bill-was-a-mistake-during...
