Vietnam hands over two American fugitives to US police

The U.S. has dispatched a special aircraft to Hanoi for extraditing two American fugitives caught hiding in Vietnam. The investigation office of the Ministry of Public Security on Friday handed over Wade Astle, 46, wanted for "child sexual abuse" and Hammett Andrew, 31, wanted for "manufacturing, distributing, buying or possessing drugs" to the U.S. police, Major General To An Xo, spokesman of the ministry, said Sunday. Xo said the U.S. police was using a special aircraft to carry the two fugitives home to ensure safety and prevent possible spread of Covid-19 virus. Earlier, the U.S. had informed Vietnamese police about the two criminals who had fled abroad. Hanoians cook traditional rice cakes for flood victims Hanoians have been gathering at a pagoda for several days to cook "banh chung" for people suffering from the historic floods in central Vietnam. On the morning of October 21, hundreds of people came to the Dinh Quan Pagoda in Hanoi’s Bac Tu Liem District to make  banh chung , a square-shaped pack of sticky rice with meat and bean fillings wrapped in green leaves usually made for  Tet  (the Lunar New Year). Each was given one task like preparing ingredients, arranging leaves, wrapping, or cooking. They work around the clock to ensure the  banh chung  would reach the affected areas at the earliest. For the last two weeks central Vietnam has been hit by severe floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains. As of October 21 at least 111 people had lost their lives and 22 were missing. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has begun a three-day official visit to Vietnam, his first overseas destination after taking office last month. The flight carrying PM Suga, accompanied by his wife, landed in Hanoi on schedule at 6 p.m Sunday. Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc will host an official welcome ceremony for his Japanese counterpart on the morning of Monday. Later, the two leaders will hold talks and meet the press. Suga will also meet with Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. The Japanese PM is scheduled to meet students of the Vietnam-Japan University, visit the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Monument of the Martyrs on Monday.
