Billy Joe Shaver

Billy Joe Shaver, singer-songwriter and hero of 'outlaw' country, dies at 81 Country music singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver, whom  Willie Nelson  once called "the greatest living songwriter," died Wednesday at the age of 81. His friend Connie Nelson said he died Wednesday in his native Texas following a stroke. Shaver rose to acclaim in 1973 with his debut album, "Old Five and Dimers Like Me," and was often referred to as part of  the "outlaw country" movement  of the 1970s along with figures like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, both of whom recorded his songs. Jennings, in fact, recorded 10 songs of Shaver's on one album alone, "Honky Tonk Heroes," released the same year as Shaver's debut. Shaver had previously had his break as a songwriter when Kris Kristofferson discovered him and recorded his song "Good Christian Soldier" on another landmark album, 1971's "The Silver Tongued Devil and I." Quibi is shutting down just months after launching Quibi, the short-form video streaming service from Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, announced Wednesday that it will be shutting down. The abrupt end to the expensive project comes just six months after its debut. Quibi was reported to be returning  $350 million  of the $1.75 billion it raised from investors. (NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News, is a minority investor in Quibi, and NBC News produced a daily show on the platform. NBCUniversal and NBC News declined to comment.) The company struggled to win over subscribers and meet its growth targets. Since it launched in April, Quibi has faced tepid reviews and internal strife, and it has failed to win over consumers in the numbers it needed to thrive. Katzenberg was already exploring options last month, including  selling the company , as he struggled to sign up subscribers. The service, which was highly anticipated given the involvement of Katzenberg, the fo...
