Live scores, updates and highlights as No. 14 Wisconsin opens the 2020 Big Ten season

Redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz looked like a seasoned veteran in the first half on Friday night as No. 14 Wisconsin took a 28-7 lead on Illinois into halftime of the Big Ten's first game of the 2020 season. Starting in place of the injured Jack Coan, Mertz completed 14 of 14 passes and tossed four touchdowns as he became the first Wisconsin freshman quarterback to start a season opener since 1978.

Illinois stole some momentum with 3:22 left in the second quarter when Tarique Barnes ran a Wisconsin fumble back 39 yards for a touchdown. But Mertz responded with two touchdown strikes before the half as the Badgers got a great start in their push for revenge of last season's 24-23 loss to Illinois. The memory of that game should keep Wisconsin on high alert in the second half, considering that it was a 31-point favorite at that time and led 20-7 in the third quarter before Illinois' comeback.
