Flint-area playoff football highlights: Swartz Creek makes history; Braylon Silvas runs wild
FLINT – Swartz Creek’s football team made school history Thursday night.
Until this season, the Dragons had qualified for the Michigan high school football just two times since playoffs began in 1975. But they had never advanced to the second round.
Until Thursday.
Swartz Creek extended the best football season in school history by beating visiting Carman-Ainsworth 28-6 in the opening round of the Division 2 playoffs.
The Dragons will play the winner of Friday’s game between Traverse City Central (5-1) and Saginaw Heritage (0-5) in next week’s second round for a spot in the Nov. 13-14 district finals.
Senior Brennen Larion scored three rushing touchdowns for the Dragons and John Pavelchek added another TD after taking a blocked punt into the end zone as Swartz Creek raised its record to 5-2.
This year marked the second time in three seasons the Dragons made the playoffs. They lost to 50-28 to Midland in the opening round of the 2018 playoffs after falling 53-27 to Caledonia in the first round of the 2012 postseason.
Carman-Ainsworth, which fell to 1-6, scored its only TD on a 30-yard pass from Gavin Glassetter to Terrence Meux with 3:37 left in the second quarter after Creek took a 14-0 lead.
Larion rushed 22 times for 195 yards, Noah Kalakay rushed for 77 more yards, Cameron Spencer had 10 tackles and Andrew Booth added nine tackles.
It was the first playoff game in Swartz Creek’s renovated football complex.
