Trump menosprecia a Fauci y hace afirmaciones sin fundamento sobre el coronavirus en una llamada de campaña

(CNN) — Un presidente Donald Trump frustrado y a veces mal hablado afirmó en una llamada de campaña que la gente está cansada de escuchar sobre la pandemia mortal que ha matado a más de 215.000 estadounidenses y menospreció al Dr. Anthony Fauci al calificarlo como un «desastre» que está hace «500 años».

Refiriéndose a Fauci y a otros funcionarios de salud como «idiotas», Trump declaró que el país está listo para salir del desastre de salud, incluso cuando los casos aumentan de nuevo y los expertos médicos advierten que lo peor puede estar por venir.

Trump afirmó sin fundamento que si Fauci estuviera a cargo más de medio millón de personas estarían muertas en Estados Unidos. Y describió las recomendaciones ofrecidas por su propio Gobierno para mitigar la propagación de la enfermedad como una pesada molestia.

«La gente está cansada del covid. Tengo estos grandes mítines», dijo Trump, en una llamada con el personal de campaña desde el hotel que lleva su nombre en Las Vegas, donde pasó dos noches en medio de un cambio de su campaña en el oeste. «La gente está diciendo ‘lo que sea. Déjennos en paz’. Están cansados de eso. La gente está cansada de escuchar a Fauci ya todos estos idiotas».

«Fauci es un buen tipo», prosiguió Trump. «Lleva aquí 500 años», agregó.

Fauci ha sido el director del Instituto Nacional de Alergias y Enfermedades Infecciosas desde 1984 y es miembro del Grupo de Trabajo de Coronavirus de la Casa Blanca. Casi al mismo tiempo que Trump echaba humo por teléfono, Fauci recibía la primera Mención Presidencial por Liderazgo Ejemplar de la Academia Nacional de Medicina durante una ceremonia virtual. Fauci dijo que se quedó «sin palabras» al recibir el reconocimiento.

«Tenemos muchos desafíos por delante y no puedo evitar pensar que realmente estamos atravesando un momento inquietantemente anticiencia en ciertos segmentos de nuestra sociedad», dijo Fauci durante el evento virtual.

Trump criticó abiertamente a Fauci en momentos en que su campaña emite al aire un anuncio de televisión con el médico en el que implican que Fauci respaldó el manejo de la pandemia por parte de Trump.

Fauci cuestionó el anuncio. Dijo que sacaron de contexto sus palabras y pidió a la campaña que lo retirara. Pero el anuncio fue ampliamente visto como un reconocimiento por parte del personal de campaña del presidente de que Fauci tiene credibilidad entre los votantes que han rechazado la respuesta de Trump.

El presidente va por detrás en las encuestas de su rival demócrata Joe Biden en parte debido a su mal manejo de la pandemia de coronavirus. Trump regresó recientemente a la campaña electoral después de ser diagnosticado con el virus. Y ha rechazado los protocolos de salud pública en sus mítines políticos. En la llamada, el presidente volvió a burlarse de las medidas de distanciamiento social de Biden.

Trump: ‘Fauci es un desastre’

Mientras recorre los campos de batalla electoral, Trump ha estado buscando un mensaje final que resuene entre los votantes confundidos por el virus y desconfiados de su respuesta. Los intentos de sus asesores de convencer a Trump de que adopte un tono más serio sobre la pandemia se han detenido. En un mitin en Nevada el domingo, Trump intentó atacar a Biden al decir que su rival «escucharía a los científicos» si fuera elegido presidente.

Por el contrario, Trump ha dejado de asistir a las reuniones de su grupo de trabajo sobre el coronavirus, cuya influencia ha disminuido drásticamente. En cambio, el presidente ha confiado en el consejo del Dr. Scott Atlas. Atlas es un radiólogo cuyas visiones sobre el uso de mascarillas y otras prácticas de mitigación están en desacuerdo con casi todas las opiniones científicas.

La dinámica ha provocado tensiones entre los funcionarios de salud del Gobierno. Incluso con Fauci, a cuyas advertencias sobre el virus Trump ha reaccionado con enojo durante meses.

«Fauci es un desastre. Si lo escuchara, tendríamos 500.000 muertos», dijo en la llamada de campaña el lunes. Luego dijo que serían 700.000 u 800.000.

«Si hay un reportero (en la llamada), puedes tenerlo tal como lo dije, no me podría importar menos», dijo Trump. Una fuente le dio acceso a CNN a la llamada.

El intento de Trump de apuntalar a su personal de campaña 15 días antes del día de las elecciones se produjo en medio de preocupaciones generalizadas entre los republicanos de que su incapacidad para perfeccionar un mensaje final tenga efectos nefastos no solo para su propia carrera, sino también para el control del Senado.

Aunque su enojo era evidente en la llamada, Trump buscó proyectar optimismo.

«Este es lo mejor que he estado en cualquier campaña», dijo Trump con respecto a sus posibilidades de reelección. «Hoy es el día que he sentido mejor en cualquiera de las campañas», agregó.

«Vamos a ganar», dijo. «No hubiera dicho eso hace tres semanas», remarcó.

Después de que surgieron historias sobre señalamientos en la campaña ante una posible derrota, Trump insistió en que estaba satisfecho con el trabajo que está haciendo su equipo. Esto incluyó a su secretario general, Mark Meadows, a quien se ha culpado internamente por manejar mal el diagnóstico de covid-19 de Trump y su hospitalización posterior.

«Amo a Mark Meadows. Me tomó dos años sacarlo del Congreso. Mark Meadows está haciendo un buen trabajo. No lo voy a despedir», dijo al respecto.
