Live Match Thread

FT: Toronto FC 1-0 Atlanta United—A little winner from Piatti earns Toronto FC all three points as the Reds extend their unbeaten run to nine and lead atop the MLS standings to six points!

89’—GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL! Toronto FC 1-0 Atlanta United—It’s Pablo Piatti!!!!! What a header after a Richie Laryea cross takes a deflection, and Piatti—perhaps the smallest guy on the pitch—reacts, running away from goal, and guides the ball into the back of the net. What a goal. What a moment. Another late win for Toronto FC here?

85’—A bit of Nelson skill on display there as he finds himself in a good position, but takes too long to make a move. Some trickery gets the rookie out of a trouble as he nutmegs the Atlanta United defender before resetting. You could hear the excitement in KJ’s voice when Nelson picked up the ball...

78’—Liam Fraser checks into the match for Marky Delgado. Do Toronto FC have a goal in them? Atlanta look like they might.

68’—Big save from Q! He denies Torres, who just checked into the game, from six yards out as the striker gets up for a header off a cross down the right-hand side from Lennon, but Q dives to his left to say no! We’re still looking for our first goal here...

62’—Nick DeLeon getting set to check into the match for Toronto FC. I’m guessing it’s for Tsubasa Endoh. As I’m typing this, Omar Gonzalez makes a great sliding challenge. Him and Ciman have been quietly solid tonight, but they’re only 23 of the way there. Jayden Nelson also checks into the game for Patrick Mullins. Here we go.

58’—Atlanta, with the injection of Barco and Moreno, look like a completely new side. They’re dangerous on every attack. Reds doing well to do defend, so credit to them, but they’re being outplayed so far this second half.

52’—Great effort from Pozuelo, who almost bends one from outside the box incredibly into the far post. His effort goes just high and just wide, however, and this match remains scoreless.

50’—For someone who just checked into the match, Richie Laryea is being asked to do a ton of defending and that’s not the Canadian’s strongest facet. He’s done alright though and hopefully the Reds can settle into this second half.

46’—Two very dangerous substitutions coming into the game for Atlanta in the form of their designated players: Moreno and Barco. Richie Laryea checks into the match for Tony Gallacher. Keep an eye on which wing he starts (and finishes on). Vanney told me he believes Richie is better on the right, for what it’s worth.

8:38 p.m. EST—Our 30 seconds of fame this evening...s/o Martyn Bailey for the numbers.

8:33 p.m. EST—Moments away from getting the second half started, but here’s a must-see from KJ if you didn’t catch the pregame show.

HT: Toronto FC 0-0 Atlanta United—Both teams enter the break scoreless as The Reds dominate and dictate most of the first half. What do you think Vanney should change in the second half and how long do you think it’ll be until we see Richie Laryea?

44’—Fantastic ball from Alejandro Pozuelo driven across the front of goal after some nice build-up play from the Reds, but unfortunately it’s out of the reach of Patrick Mullins. First thought that came to mind: I wonder had it been Ayo or Jozy in that position rather than Mullins if that ball would be in the back of the net...

41’—Laurent Cim— uh, yeah. That’ll be a GIF. Clean meg.

40’—Get up Omar! Gonzalez climbs and gets a head to the ball of a corner—he makes good contact too—but unfortunately it’s right at Guzan.

36’—I can confirm I was one of those people screaming Jaap Stam at the stream.

30’—It was offside anyways, but great save from Quentin Westberg to deny the Atlanta striker from point blank.

27’—Great recover from Tony Gallacher to block a shot from Atlanta United’s Gallagher. That is not a typo. It might’ve been ruled out for offside, but that was definitely a chance for the visitors.

20’—Not a great sight for Toronto FC as Jonathan Osorio goes down injured. Damn. That’s a shame. Michael Bradley checks into the game for the stand-in captain, returning to action after missing the last nine games.

17’—TFC moving the ball beautifully tonight at The Rent. I’ve been particularly impressed with Marky Delgado’s ability to find the forward pass through the lines.

13’—That’s not a foul! Mullins might’ve been in after Robinson slips at the back, but the referee blows the play down for a foul on the TFC striker...Atlanta catches a break there.

9’—CHANCE! Great chance for Pozuelo after some nice build-up play from the Reds springs Auro Jr. who cuts it back for Poz, but the Spaniard finds Guzan’s hands. That was a real chance for TFC there...

8’—I know it hasn’t been the prettiest start, but I’m loving this aggressive press from Toronto FC. Just have to tidy up some things at the back and not be prone to making silly errors and the Reds should be able to see this game out...but easier said than done.

1’—Players, officials, coaches etc. take a knee prior to kickoff in protest against racial injustice. And we’re off. Torotno FC are trying to get back into the win column and extend their lead atop the MLS standings, while Atlanta United are looking to build some momentum in their push to reach the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.

7:25 p.m. EST—MARTYN BAILEY AND WAKING THE RED SHOUT OUT on TSN! Let’s go. Well deserved MB1, but also shout out to Jeffrey P. Nesker for putting in hard work behind the scenes on the anti-Supporters Shield Foundation front.

7:17 p.m. EST—Supporters’ Shield talk on TSN. Here we go. — Biggest Takeaway: Greg Vanney is an incredible communicator. I’ll post the video soon, but couldn’t have said it better myself.

7:03 p.m. EST—TSN has Toronto FC in a 4-4-2 formation tonight...interesting.

7:00 p.m. EST—This is about to get good. Greg Vanney coming up on TSN’s pregame. Time to let loose on the Supporters’ Shield talk. We’re about 37 minutes or so away from kickoff.

6:45 p.m. EST—A lot to take away from that Toronto FC Starting XI, but even without the names on the injury report, how good does that bench look? That’s some scary-good depth. I think today might finally be the day we see the debut of 16 year old Jahkeele Marshall Rutty.

6:40 p.m. EST—The plot thickens...friendly reminder that Canadian teams are normally omitted from the CCL spot by virtue of winning the league.

6:30 p.m. EST—Needless to say, it’s been an eventful 24 hours, but I’m happy we’re finally here. Thank you once again for tagging along this evening, as the Reds are set to take on Atlanta United for the first time since eliminating the Five Stripes in last year’s Eastern Conference final. Aside from Supporters Shield talk—which we’ll get to as Greg Vanney is expected to join TSN’s pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m. EST—the biggest storylines tonight are going to be some notable omissions from the TFC lineup. Here’s their pregame injury report, and it isn’t pretty. The one positive takeaway, of course, is Michael Bradley, who finds himself not on the report for the first time since Sept. 1. Keep an eye on how sharp he is tonight because I feel like he’s been raring to go.

STARTING XI

Michael Bradley makes the bench for Toronto FC after missing out on the last nine matches. Also, check out the last three names on the TFC reserves... free the young guns!

And for the bad guys tonight...we may get to see some new DPs later on...

PREVIEW (Courtesy Brady Reid)

TORONTO, Canada— Toronto FC host Atlanta United at their temporary Connecticut home in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference final.

The Reds look to make it nine in a row with at least a point against The Five Stripes on Sunday evening.

TFC is coming off a midweek stalemate with the New York Red Bulls where an early Alejandro Pozuelo penalty was cancelled out by a sensational strike from Red Bulls substitute Caden Clark.

Fatigue was clearly a factor on Wednesday with the congestion of the recent fixture list catching up to the Reds in the latter half of the game before ultimately coughing up the lead thanks to Clark’s 77th-minute finish.

It’s been a roller coaster year for Atlanta who started the season with two straight wins and looked primed for another deep playoff run in 2020. Since then, ATL has moved on from their manager and a key Designated Player, failing to string together consecutive victories since. They currently find themselves in tenth place and fighting for the final postseason places.

Atlanta stole a point in South Beach last time out when Jake Mulraney came off the bench to tie things up, salvaging a 1-1 draw against Inter Miami. Mulraney’s finish was United’s lone shot on target in the ninety.

Chance creation has been a big concern in recent memory for Atlanta with the departure of Pity Martinez doing little to help the cause.

The injury report for the Reds is much the same as the Red Bulls match as Justin Morrow and Jozy Altidore remain sidelined, with the latter a ways away from getting back to match fitness.

Greg Vanney will potentially get one big boost in midfield as captain Michael Bradley is expected to feature to some extent against Atlanta.

Injury concerns on the other side are focused on the continued absence of talisman Josef Martinez. The 2018 MVP and Golden Boot winner has been rehabbing the ACL injury he suffered in the first match of the season for the better part of seven months.

The potential return of Ezequiel Barco and new DP Marcelino Moreno to the squad should give Atlanta a boost heading into the weekend clash.

Since the Five Stripes joined MLS in 2017, the two sides have faced off seven times including last year’s playoff showdown, with TFC losing on just one occasion.

In a contest that averages nearly four goals a game historically, the prospect is there for plenty of goals at both ends in what should be a high flying affair in Hartford.

Additional Notes:

  • Alejandro Pozuelo continues to lead the league in goal contributions with 18 (8 goals, 10 assists) thanks to his PK on Wednesday.
  • Since entering the league in 2017, Atlanta has made the postseason in each of its first three seasons, reaching at least the Eastern Conference final on two occasions.
